Description

About Sara Johansdotter and the origin of the pattern

I created this pattern from a sampler made by Sara Johansdotter in 1860.

Sara was born in 1851 in Skulegården, Väne Åsaka, which is in the southwestern part of Sweden, close to the Gothenburg area.
Before she got married, Sara attended damask weaving courses taught by Ebba Dahlgren at a neighboring farm. She was awarded for her weaving and
yarn-making at local craft shows. Some of her weavings are now carefully preserved at the Vänersborgs Museum.

In 1879, Sara Johansdotter married farmer Bengt Axelsson at Lerum Uppegård, Väne Åsaka. She had two daughters, Maria (born 1882), and Ida Helena,
whom she taught weaving and embroidery.

Maria “Mia” Axelsson (Married Hallberg) continued her textile studies with Ebba Dahlgren and at an all-girls’s high school.
She mastered several different types of weaving techniques. In addition, Maria was a talented painter. She eventually became a teacher herself.
She had a long career as a weaver and textile teacher in various Swedish schools; including a school for the Deaf, as well as holding private courses, until 1948.
